Awirs' Quarry

The former Awirs quarry is now home to a climbing area in Flémalle , near Liège . It offers nearly 120 routes, up to grade 7c, and can accommodate around 60 climbers. Recently, the Belgian Alpine Club painted the boundaries of the unclimbed areas: as it is a former quarry, the rock is less solid than in so-called "natural" rock formations. It is advisable to avoid the north face, which is classified as a protected natural area.

The Awirs quarry is located right next to the Schmerling cave, where the first remains of Neanderthals in the world were discovered.
